Week 9

Lecture
In today's lecture we learnt about communication. Compared to twenty years ago communication is very different due to information and communication technology (ICT).

Communication can be between individuals, individuals and organisations, between business and an external organisation. There are for types of communications such as:
Place Dependent
Place Independent
Synchronous
Asynchronous

Synchronous is when all parties have to be engages in communication during the same time.

Asynchronous are where parties take their turn in their own time.

Place Dependent is when all parties have to be in the same place.

Place Independent is when parties can be "anywhere" in cyberspace.

Here are a few example of ICT
Mobile telephone
Video and tele-conferencing
Ipods, Pm3, Lap-tops
Electronic Mail
Multi-media communications

Issues with using emails use is it is difficult to convey feeling, easy to confuse or send wrong signal, and is considered to be informal. Emails can be easily forwarded to other people and can be read by others.

Benefits of using ICT is it provides a means of communications for people with common interest, can provide a great source of information, communication tool to suit many purposes and a variety of contexts.

Workshop
In today's workshop i had to go onto the Google.com web page and click on groups and choose a topic of my choice. I chose the topic of dogs as it was the first thing that i thought of. The groups that came up were:
href=" src="http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/2232/dogseg6.th.jpg" border="0">
By going through these groups i saw that they were conversations between people, like blogs but for connections with other resulting to the subject. I read the opinions of people who thought if you have a puppy and a old dog that when the puppy grows up it will want to fight the older dog. People replied with either agreeing with the writer or disagreeing. Many people shared their opinions giving me much information.

PODCAST
By going through this web site http://music.yahoo.com/track/16188810 i found that you can listen to many transcripts, talk shows and anything that is available of talks being recorded. This could be helpful for others as they can download their favourite talk shows or radio. I found that there is a fee for some and you have to subscribe.
This could be helpful to people who are in university because if they miss a lecture at university then they are able to go back, listen to the speech and are able to keep up to date with their studies. As the lecture will always be on site they can keep going back to it so they can remember more of the speech.

Reading One
In today's reading i had to read an article about a guide to using E-mail, http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/page6175.cfm. When you are the person sending an email here are some tips to make it readable so that you get the reply you desire. Make sure you ask your question during the first few sentences of your message. Doing this first will make sure that you don't loose the attention of the reader. When asking a question you must let the reader know you are looking for a response. Be clear about when you want a response as you could be waiting a while. Proof read all your messages with correct punctuation and grammar, this will make sure that your reader knows exactly what you are talking about and what you are asking for. Don't switch topics, this can cause your questions to get overlooked. Once you have finished the email provide a summary.
When you are the recipient don't make assumptions about the senders emotional state at the time. If they sound like they are angry at you they may not be, go away for a bit and come back and try to read the email in a different perspective. If one does decide that the email was an attack at you, don't reply with an attack back to that person, it will be easier to call the person or set up an in-person meeting, this will stop further conflict during emails. If you have received an email with bad grammar and punctuation then ask the sender to clarify what they meant or ask others for their opinions.

Reading two
In the next reading i have to read an article called 'The problem with SPAM'. http://www.caube.org.au/problem.htm. This site defines spamming as unsolicited bulk email (UBE). It is known to be a unique form of advertising. The problems involved with spamming is that the spammer can transmit one million messages for no more cost then to transmit one. This can increase the the processing and storage requirements of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). UBE can drown out legitimate communications making mail useless for its purpose. UBE cost nothing to send but when they send it, it cost you money. If the spammer is not paying for their advertising to be transmitted then someone else is. There are ways it can cost money. ISPs in Australia mostly charge for the amount of time that you connect or by the amount of data downloaded. UBE can increase the time you spend downloading mail and will make a change in your ISP bill. UBE is capable to exceed the bolume of legitimate mail once this is done it becomes difficult to find legitimate email amongst the junk mail. Some alternatives to avoid this to have a filter installed in your email this means that it automatically sends the spammers mail to your junk mail so you don't have to keep deleting the spam or get confused between your mail and the spammers.

Week 8

Lecture Summary
In today's lecture we learnt about presentation strategies. We had to watch a video and create ten tips for a good presentation. We were then shown a practitioner's point of view. They said the presentation contains compelling data that will survive scrutiny after the presentation is over, the presenter makes an impression congruent with the data and provides the emotional connection that is crucial to the message's success.

They types of self contained presentation there can be are:
Web-Page
CD-ROM
Video
Written Presentation:
Essay
Paper
and oral presentations.

A visual message is not enough as an audience only remembers:
10% of what they see
25% of what they see and hear
40% of what they see, hear and write down
and 60% of what they experience interactively

To have a well structure presentation you need to have an introduction, body and conclusion.
The introduction should include attention getter's, thesis statement, audience adaption, credibility statement, preview and a transition to the body.

The body should contain main ideas, organization patterns, connective devices and references to outside research.

The conclusion should contain a reinforcement to the thesis, review the main points and close the argument effectively.

To prepare for a presentation you should have professional appearance, avoid hand-written or overheads, always have a backup and rehearse your talk.

When using PowerPoint stick to the principle KISS, meaning Keep It Simple Stupid. So do not use PowerPoint as your main point of delivery.

Workshop
In today's workshop i had to go to 'Laura Guertin's Online Resources for how to prepare and deliver a presentation' at http://www.personal.psu.edu/uxg3/blogs/undergraduateresearch/2008/02/online-resources-for-how-to-pr.html .

I have to list my top five strategies for making a presentations to do with this site and the lecture,
Use humour, but use it wisely.
Believe in the presentation.
Practice
State the Problem
Relate to the audience

Workshop two
For the second part of the workshop i have to create a six slide power point on how to give a low impact power point presentation. Here are my screen shots of the power point:

Week 7

Lecture
Lecture Summary In today's lecture we talked about EndNote. We reference so that we are able to distinguish our ideas from those of others and acknowledge our sources. This also enables to reader to follow up if they are interested in the source we have used. EndNote is a database that can be used as a reference manager and a bibliography maker. EndNot can be used in two ways
Standalone Program
Integrated into MS Word.

EndNote works as it is a flat-file database system, where the content is displayed in columns and rethe references are displayed in a chosen style. You can get EndNote through the ECU Library Web page. We then learnt how to open an EndNot Library and how to save it. We use Endnot to keep track of a growing number of references, display a variety of recognised styles of referencing, handles a variety of types of references, searchings of records of references associated with a specific project and it can be integrated with Microsoft WORD.
Some things one should know when using Endnote is to not expect to get your results first time, eliminate clutter from the display interface and back up your library

Tutorial

Workshop One
In today's workshop i have to review the online referencing guide and include examples of referencing five different types of electronic format material. The five types i chose are:

Workshop Two
Exercise One
In workshop two i had to go into the web site provided. I had to configure Endnote and type in the information provided. After i had done this Endnote provided me with a reference of the details i had entered.

Exercises Two
In exercises two i had to go on this site http://computer.howstuffworks.com/blog.htm and type in the same requirements for Endnote but with the information of this web site. Endnote gave me a reference of the details.

Exercise Three
In exercise three i had follow the further ins ructions attached to Endnote worksheet. I had to go through the ECU library database, find an article and use it as a reference on Endnote. I then had to transfer my findings onto WORD. This shows a quote from the documents with and in-text reference and an end-text for the texts. Here is a screen shot of my work:

Readings
In today's Reading I have to summarize a resource called "Guide to Endnot v9 @ ECU" from http://www.research.ecu.edu.au/grs/data/tmp/guide_to_endnotev9ecu.pdf. Endnote is a program that stores, manages and searches references in personal libraries that are set up by the user. Endnote saves hours of time as a reference only needs to entered into the Endnote library once. Endnote will produce the reference in citations and reference list. Using Endnote, it will ensure that there is no mistakes and no missing items. To build an Endnote Library, select New from the File menu then select a directory from the Save in list. To add a reference to the library select New Reference from the reference menu. Then click Reference type, a drop down box should appear with type of referencing. Select the type you want and a list of titles should appear, enter your information into the fields, you will be able to view the reference by exiting out of the pop-up window.

Week 6

Lecture Summary

In today's lecture we learnt about elvauation and authentication of a Web site. We were told about the context of the World Wide Web such as:
Open protocols
This contains swift and convenient information exchange and anyone with access to a computer can create a web content.
Open architecture
This has no enforceable quality control and non-enforced classification and met-tagging system.
Not all sites are created equal and to evaluate the IQ on the WWW there are some principle to consider such as:
Content
Visual Feel
Navigation
ease of use

Information resource exist so it can provide a unique insight into the information so that it can be found. Accuracy helps evaluate the IQ of the WW as anyone can publish anythin gon the Web mand can make the information un-credible or reliable. Authority is an issue aswell as it is often hard to determe a web page's authorship, even if the page is signed, the qualification arent usually given. Objectivity is an issue as frequently the goals of the sponser/authors are not always cleary stated. The currency's issues is that publication or revision dates are not always provided and may have various meaning. The coverage issues is that the web coverage often differs from print coverage and is frequently difficult to determine the exten of coverage as sometimes web information is just-for-fun.
Some things to consider with authentication is where is the site, is it a personal hompage of offical sanction. Try to find a name, position and credentials to see who wrote the text. Other considerations is the sources of information, validation of information and references.
Some tips are to look at the URL before you click to view the page. Look to see if it is a personal site, is the domain name appropriate for the content and if the text is published by an entity that makes sense.
We were then told about a group assignmnet that we will be doing of a production of an easy to use guide on how to evaluate, validate and authenticate web-bases information and resources.

Workshop1
In today's workshop i was asked to read an ICYouSee critical thinking page. http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think.html this page contains stratagies for evaluating the information found in websites. A stratagie i learnt, is to make sure you are in the right place, this tells me that you can not find everything on the internet. But to make sure you are in the right site is to check if the site addresses the topic you are researching and if the page is worth visiting.

The next stratagie i learnt was to look for ambiguity, manipulative, reasoning and bias to check if the information is credible as anyone can put information on the net. Question the authority of all the web sources and do not just accept an authors word without checking for supportive evidence.

The next stratagie i learnt was to consider the source. Try and find out who wrote or created the web pages, not just from their names but from something that indicates they are a good source. Some pages usually provide an 'about the author'.
Another stratagie is to identify why the web page was created. Is the purpose to inform, persuade or is it to sell you something.
Another stratagie i learnt was to check for grammer and correct spelling, this will show me if the page is authentic as a person who has written it for a purpose would have better skills and put more effort into their presentation.
The last stratagie i learnt was to distinguish web pages from pages found on the web, you can do this by deciding if the page was originally an article and not the for the purpose of the internet.

Workshop 2
I now have to read two more articles and compare it to the previous article i just talked about to see if there is anything else i can learn.

The second article i read is called Evaluating Internet Source at http://www.taftcollege.edu/newTC/Academic/INCO48/sec6-4.htm. From this site I have learnt that when you find a an article from a electronic source in a library, then the chances are that it is a reliable source as the librarian has previously evaluated the article and has found it acceptable. But if you use an article of the internet no one has elvaluated it and may be un reliable. I also learnt is to see when the page was lat updated, if the page was has not been updated recently then the laws or facts could of change by now making the information un-credible.

Workshop 3

The next part of the workshop i had to click on a link http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think60.html and complete the excersise required. I have to choose two of the attached five links about the sixties and evaluate the websites. The first article i chose to evaluate is American Cultural History: 1960 - 1969. To me this site does look as credible source. This is because at the bottom of the page it shows the date it was created, the copyright sign, statistics of the sixties, a hyperlink of the writer, the designer of the web page, when it was last updated and the logo of Lone Star College Kingwood Library. This shows me that the website contains actual information that may be correct and has been reasearch, another page that goes to information about the author, the fact that it came from a libray database meaning it has been evaluated previously and that it has been previously updated.

The second web page I decided to evaluate was sixties project Sixties Project. To me this site is not as credible as the one i just evaluted. This is because it does not go directly to the information about the sixties. The webpage was last updated in 1999 this shows me that the information may not be as credible as it is not recent, there is no information about the person/people that created the web page but only has an email and address. This could be seen as a credible source but does not have as much information as the others. The page does have some design but to me this would not be as effective as the other becuase it dosnt get straight to the point.

Week 5

Lecture

In today's lecture we were learning about search engines. There are three categories of infromation that you can find on the web, such as :
The Free, Visible Web.
The Free, Invisible Web.
and Paid Databases over the Web.

There is only two catagories of search tools, these are :
Search Engines
and Directories

A search engine is a web-based applicaction which crawls the internet, making indices of websites, usually from the information of text contained on them. Example of search engines are
Google
Yahoo
AltaVista
and AlltheWeb

Some problems that can come across when using search enginges could be that there are too many results, limited relevance or quality filtering of results to a search queary, misuse of page scoring/ranking system and building enormous indicies that include erroneous, irrelevant and out-dated results to user.

We then leart about directories which are human-edited pages. Web pages that get submitted to directored are reviewed and added by manual submission to ensure quality of the site. This can prevent pages being submitted automaticially which leads to troubles. There are many types of directories, here are some of the most reliable sort:
DMOZ....................................http://dmoz.org/
Google Directory .................http://directory.google.com/
Yahoo Directory...................http://dir.yahoo.com/
Look Smart ..........................http://www.looksmart.com/
About ....................................http://www.about.com/

Some search tips could be to use several search tools, read the search tips or help information at each search engine, for keyword searches use several words, guess a location, Select the wheat from the chaff by thinking about what you want, back up to find out where you are and use advanced search functions to narrow down the search.

Tutorial

I went onto the Monash website to read the information and four strategies that will help me to structure a good search in my Learning Log was
1) Keyword
2)Phrase
3)Boolean
4)Advanced / engine features
In the tutorial we had to do a quiz which in this quiz i finished all the questions but needed the Internet to help me out with the answers. to get the answers sufficiently i used the main point and used inverted commas and brackets.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

When searching for a quote on a search engine it is best to enclose the question in quotation marks, for example "To be or not to be". This will force the search engine to search for the words in this exact order, and will reconize the phrase as a famous quote from Hamlet. If this phrase is not done this way the search engine will chokes because they will become stop words, (unimportant words which are too short and too comman to be considered relevant strings on which to search.)

When searching for a a web page of authors or genre's, for example writer and mystery it is better to enclose the text as a phrase, you would have a better chance of getting better hits. If you enter the text as they are the search engines would most likely send back hyperlinks to all Web documents that contain those words, this could contan hundreds of thousands of URLs.
If you know what topic of your questions is use a web directory rather than a search engine. Directories will probally not give you as much references as a search engine would, but are mostly likely to be on topic.

If you are wanting to find a Web page which is published from Yahoo, then select the Computers and Internet Topic, under this you should find a subtopic of the World Wide Web. By clicking on this link you will find another list of subtopics, many of which are relevant to your search. Selecting one of these subtopics will eventually take you to Web pages which have been posted exactly for the purpose of giving you the information desired.

These exercises will help me through out university as it will make it easier for me to find my information and will cut down the time i am using to search and put that time to completing my work.

Reading 1
A search engine consists of the boundry you use to type in a query, When you use a search engine, you are asking it to look in its index to find matches with the words you have typed in. Regional- Some search engines are limited geographically. For example, only information on Web sites in Australia may be indexed.
Targeted- limit themselves to one subject, like biography, medicine, graphics, art, fishing,
Reference-These provide information from a set of reference works, such as an encyclopedia. Britannica.
Directories- Directories are categorized lists of sites picked out by human editors. Directory databases are therefore much smaller than those of search engines.

Reading 2
when searching about topics using a "sum" can help it as an example is: use +history+medieval, or documents mentioning both, another way of getting a specific topic is using 'Boolean' logic example is: use history AND medieval for documents mentioning both.

Reading 3
Keyword Analysis,
Setting your Benchmark - Includes recording your current ranking for every keyword phrase in the search results, how many page have been indexed and much more.
Search Engine Optimisation - Completion of the search engine optimization, carry on the search engine and directory submissions.

Week 4

Lecture
Lecture 4 was about the world wide web. The Web is a universe of accessible information stored on computers throughout the world. The information is available through a gigantic network called the Internet. A network of servers are linked together by a common protocol, allowing access to millions of hypertext resources. I learnt that .com – commercial (of a commercial nature), .org – organisation (non-profit), .net – network (when .com not available), .gov – government, .edu – education

Tutorial
In this weeks tutorial i had to had to look at http://www.haggishunt.scotsman.com/ and http://www.molossia.org/ and discuss the authenticity or the spoofed.
The website appears fake as its about haggis which is sheep's intestines although on the website there are pictures of platypus's another reason that it appears fake is that there is a lot of advertising on the website usually on a real website there is hardly any advertising. The website contains a lot of pictures rather than more information which doesn't help it look authentic. When you open up the web page there is always a fact, one of the facts states that it is a mistaken belief that haggis is some type of pudding made from sheep's innards where in actual fact that is what haggis actually is.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The Molossia website seems to be a spoof as well as down the bottom of the page it states that "The Republic of Molossia bears no relation of any kind to the ancient Greek nation of the same name" which is saying that it has no relation with the actual country. Another reason is that when you go the home page of the site you do not really understand why the website exists as you do not get much from the home page you have to browse a lot through the website to find out what it is all about. Another reason could be that the pictures on the website seem a spoof they seem to be there to joke about and not real as looks like they have been edited. The web page consits of a online shop where most information websites do not consist of online shops.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The following Web address: http://www.martinlutherking.org/ i had to write down what i expect to find on this website than actually look at the website and write what i thought of it.

I expect to find a lot of information about his life and his famous speech. I do not expect that many pictures of him as i think it could be more written information rather then pictures of him at places.

When the site loaded my first impression was that there was not any information straight out or any of his famous sayings at first glance i did not like the website as it also had little advertisements as such saying rap lyrics and learn more about kwanzaa which i thought it made the site seem not great to use.

After researching on martin Luther king i thought the website was good as it had a lot of information about his thoughts but there was a a little to much advertising on the home page which put me of a little bit although once looking around i realised there was actually a Fair amount of information about him.

After completing these exercises i have learnt how to tell the difference in real websites and spoof websites, this allows me to complete assignments knowing that i got information using real websites that are not just advertising and there for no reason.

Reading 1
The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be done through networking was a serious of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider in August1962 discussing his "Galactic Network" concept. In late 1966 Roberts went to DARPA to develop computer network concept and put together his plan publishing it in 1967. In 1968, after Roberts and the DARPA funded community had refined the overall structure and specifications for the ARPANET, an RFQ was released by DARPA for the development of one of the key components. In October 1972 Kahn organized a large, very successful demonstration of the ARPANET at the International Computer Communication Conference. This was the first public demonstration of this new network technology to the public and from then on it became huge.

Reading 2
The Internet is a system for allowing computers to communicate with each other. The first step towards the modern computer was Samuel Morse's invention in 1844 of communication using electronic impulses.
The War had produced a considerable advance in design technology, but were still at the stage of large and complex calculating machines.
In 1972, they successfully employed a new program to allow the sending of messages over the net, allowing direct person-to-person communication that we now refer to as e-mail. This development we will deal with at length in the next section.
The WWW concept was designed in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee and scientists at CERN, the European centre for High Energy Physics, who were interested in making easier to retireve research documentation.
1990 Archie, developed at McGill University (Montreal) first search engine for finding and retrieving computer files. At the time these large institutional computers placed their data and program files into two categories: open and closed. When you 'logged-in' to another computer, you could access the 'open' files by identifying yourself as "anonymous" and using your e-mail address as the password. Then you could browse through their archive and download any files you wanted.

Week 3

Lecture
Online libraries was the first part of the lecture showing us why they are good some reasons were convenience, currency and you can have access anytime of the day. Different types of online library's, artworks, musical, online journals, although there are limitations not often updated so can be out of date, sometimes you have to pay. Second part was online databases i learnt the definition " An organised collection of information (data), characterised by the use of data fields, that provide procedural methods for retrieving information. " and types of these are
People Searches,E-mail Directories, Maps & Atlases and News & Media. Some advantages are that they are, Comprehensive, Current, Browsable, Searchable, 24/7 Access and they are in Electronic Format. Some disadvantages are difficult to navigate and also there is lots of information sometimes to much, lots of advertising.

Tutorial
In the tutorial we did and activity that we had to Log onto and explore the ECU Library Service(http://www.ecu.edu.au/library/) then find a journal article on a online journal on the economic impact of global warming on business then to record in my log a list of 10 useful functions or search tips from the ECU library site, giving a brief explanation of each. I then had to search the MED line plus website (http://www.medlineplus.gov/).
People who would use this service and benefit from it would be people who are needing to find out other opinions and who don't want to waste time searching all over the Internet they can just go to the databases.

Here is the link of my chosen article:
http://0-proquest.umi.com.library.ecu.edu.au/pqdweb?index=1&did=64546299&SrchMode=2&sid=3&Fmt=3&VInst=PROD&VType=PQD&RQT=309&VName=PQD&TS=1211790125&clientId=7582For

The next part of the workshop have to discuss ten tips which i think would be most helpful in using the ECU Library site.

1. Use one of the six topics under 'Find' on the ECU Library homepage.
Books, CDs and more (Catalouge)
Journal Articles (Databases)
Reserve Reading
Journal Titles
Websites
Library Resources by Faculty
This will help as you will be able to categorise your topic for your search.2

2. To find opening hours, rules and borrowing times for the library click on students under resources for.

3. Use the ECU Catalogue. This will make you search easier as you can type in the topic you are looking for and the site will provide you with the information to find it.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

4. Use the link Websites under Find to search for a website of your topic. This will make things easier as it already has the links of your topic and has been editied by the main librarian to check for accuracy.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

5. When looking for a article database click on the link journal article (database) under find. Then click on find database by title. A popup of a list of topics should come up, look for ProQuest 5000 International. Another popup should appear, and you should be able to type in key words to search for a database article.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

6. When you are looking for online journal database you can also find the topic you want by go through the same procedure before, but instead of clicking the ProQuest 5000 International link choose the title to do with your topic.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

7. MetaQuest is another way of searching for your desired topic as it gives you many options do to with your topic once you have logged in.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

8. Reserve collection services is a good way to collect material in in digital format from the libraries catalogues. This is can be accessed twenty four seven.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

9. To learn about the loan services of the ECU library click on loan services under services. This will give you a list of rules and ways to borrow books.

10. If you need to ask for help from a library member and there is none around, click on the link Ask the Library under learning assistance. This will give you a list and links of ways to get help.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

For the next part of the workshop i needed to go through the site http://www.medlineplus.gov/ and choose a drug or condition of my choice that i am interested in. The condition i chose was the digestive system. This talks about all the health problems that can come across in your digestive system while using drugs such as, abdominal pain, Anal Cancer etc. A person that may use this site would be person who is studying about a certain drug or condition or may have a certain condition that they want to find more information about, as it contains much information of many different things.
Here is a screen shot of the site:

Reading 1
Finding what you want on the web was by Bill Thompson a man who decided to make his new years resolution to break his addiction to Google as whenever he was given an assignment he always used Google and didn't result to books or not Even using online journals, he stated "Good online research has to involve more than just typing a couple of words into a search form and clicking a button."

Reading 2
Bare bones Lesson 7: Basic Search Tips was quick tips about when searching things this helped a lot as it taught me a few ways to get to what i really want and not having to go through pages of junk before I find what I want. This helps me cut down on time searching and am able to spend the time not wasted on making the assignment a bit better.
